For those of you not already aboard the “Black Mirror” craze, you need to be. What is “Black Mirror” you ask? It is a sci-fi thriller series now on Netflix, ergo you may binge away. Black Mirror explores the dark consequences of the ever intertwining worlds of modern society and unforeseeable future of technology. So if dark satire is your thing, you should give this show a go. And if dark satire isn’t your cup of tea, then ratings like 8.9/10 on IMDB and 96% on rotten tomatoes might convince you to give it a second thought.
The show has now come out with a fourth season, each season with 4-6 standalone episodes. So even if you do feel like you showed up to the party a little late, you can join everyone else in the fun because there is no order and nothing to catch up on.
We’ll list down the best episodes at the end to give you a little taste. Till then, these are the reasons why you should start watching Black Mirror.
If you fancy yourself a little paranoid conspiracy theorist like I do, you might enjoy the grim dystopian theme in every episode of this series. The fixation of the modern man with technology is not something that can be denied. The creator of the show, Charlie Brooker, can be quoted, saying, “If technology is a drug – and it does feel like a drug – then what, precisely, are the side effects?” the series explores deeper into the aspects of security, privacy, warfare and the merging of human identities with their virtual social media presence.
It is scary how the world’s idea of media and entertainment has shifted over only the past few decades. This phenomenon is probed and prodded with a touch of humor emphasizing its accuracy to a level that is very near the knuckle. Broaching question in your mind driving you to the gates of an existential crisis.
The stories Black Mirror has to tell are nothing short of disturbing but it becomes even more unsettling when its stories foretell real world events. In Season 1 of the show, “The National Anthem,” the British Prime faces a shocking dilemma when a much-loved member of the Royal Family, is kidnapped and to ensure her safety, he must have live sexual intercourse with a pig on national television. Hmmm. Remind you of #PigGate scandal of 2015 anyone?
While the show does distinctly point out the flaws in our twisted imperfect world, it does nothing to pose solutions to the issues of our royally befouled society.
